• 2. Setting:
What sort of place does the story take place in? Country? What sort of family? What about the time of the story - old, modern? Time of day?
I think the story takes place in a smaller town in America, because of the names of both Toby and the patrolman McVee, and the name of the tobacco shop, Charlie’s. Also because of the name of the Bank; First National Bank.
Toby’s and his family comes from the social lower class. His mom is an alcoholic, maybe unemployed as she’s at home when Toby gets home. We don’t hear anything about Toby’s dad, and that could be a sign of, that Toby’s parents are divorced. Toby’s bad writing could be caused by a lot of absence from school, maybe because he needs to do some of his moms’ duties, when she’s unable to.
I believe the story takes place in the middle of a working day. There are people in the streets and a patrolman at work. The only thing I can find, to settle the time of the story, is the Oldsmobile at the parking lot. It must be some years ago, definitely not modern time.
• 3. The main character:
What sort of person is Toby? What is wrong with him? What does he like and dislike? Whom does he look up to? What sort of things matter to him - and why do they matter so much to him?
Toby is a boy, who walks around town; lonely, writing tickets to people that have done something wrong, according to Toby. He is not very good at spelling, and because he doesn’t say anything throughout the story, I assume he might also have some problems talking. Toby doesn’t like people who only think of themselves, and does things that are wrong, not only illegal things, but also things that are morally wrong.
Toby is very fond of McVee the patrolman. Probably because McVee’s job is to write real tickets to people and Toby is acting like him because he want to be like him.
I don’t think that Toby’s childhood has been pleasant, especially because of his mother’s obviously problems with alcohol, and Toby not having a dad around him. This might also be the reason to his bad spelling, if his mom never helped him learning to read and write. Toby has felt all of his mother’s bad habits on himself, and knows how terrible it feels; therefor he does the best he can, to prevent others from doing bad things.
Looking good and acting nice matters so much to Toby, because these things are the exact opposites of how his mom behaves, and he doesn’t like the way she is.

Kurt Vonnegut explains stories

Flowers in the hair.. smoke in the air...
If you're going to San Francisco
"San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)" is a song, written by John Phillips of The Mamas & the Papas, and sung by Scott McKenzie.[1] It was written and released in 1967 to promote the Monterey Pop Festival.
California Dreaming:
"California Dreamin'" is a popular song by The Mamas & the Papas, first released in 1965. The song is #89 in Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.[1] The lyrics of the song express the narrator's longing for the warmth of California during a cold winter.Janis Joplin:
"Mercedes Benz"
Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends.
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
Oh Lord, won't you buy me a color TV ?
Dialing For Dollars is trying to find me.
I wait for delivery each day until three,
So oh Lord, won't you buy me a color TV ?
Oh Lord, won't you buy me a night on the town ?
I'm counting on you, Lord, please don't let me down.
Prove that you love me and buy the next round,
Oh Lord, won't you buy me a night on the town ?
Everybody!
Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends,
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
That's it!

Janis Lyn Joplin (January 19, 1943 – October 4, 1970) was an American singer-songwriter. Joplin first rose to prominence in the late 1960s as the lead singer of the psychedelic-acid rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company, and later as a solo artist with her more soulful and bluesy backing groups, The Kozmic Blues Band and The Full Tilt Boogie Band. She was one of the more popular acts at the Monterey Pop Festival and later became one of the major attractions to the Woodstock festival and the Festival Express train tour. Janis Joplin charted five singles, and other popular songs from her four-year career include "Down on Me", "Summertime", "Piece of My Heart", "Ball 'n' Chain", "Maybe", "To Love Somebody", "Kozmic Blues", "Work Me, Lord", "Cry Baby", "Mercedes Benz", and her only number one hit, "Me and Bobby McGee". Joplin was well known for her performing abilities, and her fans referred to her stage presence as "electric". At the height of her career, she was known as "The Queen of Rock and Roll" as well as "The Queen of Psychedelic Soul," and became known as Pearl amongst her friends. She was also a painter, dancer and music arranger. Rolling Stone magazine ranked Joplin number 46 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time in 2004,[1] and number 28 on its 2008 list of 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.

My way on the highway to punk..
Old Blue Eyes:
Strangers in the night:Francis Albert "Frank" Sinatra, pron.: /sɨˈnɑːtrə/, (December 12, 1915 – May 14, 1998)[6] was an American singer and film actor. Beginning his musical career in the swing era with Harry James and Tommy Dorsey, Sinatra found unprecedented success as a solo artist from the early to mid-1940s after being signed to Columbia Records in 1943. Being the idol of the "bobby soxers", he released his first album, The Voice of Frank Sinatra in 1946. His professional career had stalled by the 1950s, but it was reborn in 1953 after he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in From Here to Eternity.
He signed with Capitol Records in 1953 and released several critically lauded albums (such as In the Wee Small Hours, Songs for Swingin' Lovers!, Come Fly with Me, Only the Lonely and Nice 'n' Easy). Sinatra left Capitol to found his own record label, Reprise Records in 1961 (finding success with albums such as Ring-a-Ding-Ding!, Sinatra at the Sands and Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim), toured internationally, was a founding member of the Rat Pack and fraternized with celebrities and statesmen, including John F. Kennedy. Sinatra turned 50 in 1965, recorded the retrospective September of My Years, starred in the Emmy-winning television special Frank Sinatra: A Man and His Music, and scored hits with "Strangers in the Night" and "My Way".

Frank Sinatra's signature tune:
And the Sid Vicious version:
Sid Vicious, born John Simon Ritchie[1] (10 May 1957 – 2 February 1979), was an English musician who was the bassist of the punk group Sex Pistols. Vicious joined the Sex Pistols in early 1977 to replace Glen Matlock. Since his skills on bass guitar were highly questionable, Vicious only performed on one song on the band's sole studio album Never Mind the Bollocks. During the brief drug-filled ascendancy of the Sex Pistols, Vicious met Nancy Spungen, who became his girlfriend and manager and later died. Vicious continued his drug habit. Jailed for another offence, he emerged detoxed, but was given heroin by his mother at a party celebrating his release and died that night.

The Clash "London Calling"
London Calling (lyrics)
(Strummer/Jones)London calling to the faraway towns Now that war is declared-and battle come down London calling to the underworld Come out of the cupboard, all you boys and girls London calling, now don't look at us All that phoney Beatlemania has bitten the dust London calling, see we ain't got no swing 'Cept for the ring of that truncheon thing CHORUS The ice age is coming, the sun is zooming in Engines stop running and the wheat is growing thin A nuclear error, but I have no fear London is drowning-and I live by the river London calling to the imitation zone Forget it, brother, an' go it alone London calling upon the zombies of death Quit holding out-and draw another breath London calling-and I don't wanna shout But when we were talking-I saw you nodding out London calling, see we ain't got no highs Except for that one with the yellowy eyes CHORUS Now get this London calling, yeah, I was there, too An' you know what they said? Well, some of it was true! London calling at the top of the dial After all this, won't you give me a smile? I never felt so much a' like
About the band:
The Clash were an English punk rock band that formed in 1976 as part of the original wave of British punk. Along with punk, their music incorporated elements of reggae, ska, dub, funk, rap, dance, and rockabilly. For most of their recording career, the Clash consisted of Joe Strummer (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Mick Jones (lead guitar, vocals), Paul Simonon (bass guitar, vocals) and Nicky "Topper" Headon (drums, percussion). Headon left the group in 1982, and internal friction led to Jones's departure the following year. The group continued with new members, but finally disbanded in early 1986.The Clash achieved commercial success in the United Kingdom with the release of their debut album, The Clash, in 1977. Their third album, London Calling, released in the UK in December 1979, brought them popularity in the United States when it came out there the following month. It was declared the best album of the 1980s a decade later by Rolling Stone magazine.[1]
